Guache, gold leaf, self-drying clay, cardboard

Aztec sun

My first idea was to make a bronze casting of the sun design in green sand, but my travel plans stopped this. I went to the local art store in the village I was staying in, bought up the last pack of self-drying clay, cardboard, last package of gold leaf, a couple of paint brushes that looked like they had been made from the family rat dog, which I hoped would last the job. Small choice of paints, basic four colors. At the hardware store I got boat varnish and put the cover together while traveling round the south coast of England. The sun followed me throughout my trip.

I live on the Pacific Coast, wake up to the sunrise through the giant black cypress trees, and at the end of the day I see the sun slip into the sea…. The sun can determine the mood of the day. The lack of it makes it hard to keep going, the momentum, the interest in what I’m working on, but if the sun is out, it lifts my heart and soul, and warms my bones…. I can paint for hours, painting most of the time with natural lighting until it gets dark. Even then, I would prefer to paint by candle light, rather than use electric lights.

Watched butterflies stiff from the cold night warm up in the morning sun and put my newborn babies out of the first day of life to meet the sun. Saw flowers turn slowly all day to keep up with the sun, families stretched out, sunbathing, animals and humans, toasting the sun going down in Mexican bars.
